um, so, hi.

oh, i know, i know. long time no see. it's not that i haven't been writing, i just haven't been writing here. i got a little privacy-oriented for a while there. but i am wondering whether it might not be time to shake off my fear and get back to vixgirl. i have missed it. even though it's still pink and still has a lot of dust around the edges, it's my little place on the internet.

i am about to go on a wee trip -- well, a great big trip, to be honest. i'm going back to brazil, where i spent a crazy and very formative year in my teens. it's the first time in 20 years that i've been back.

of course i will take photos.

who's with me?

gosh, that was a busy week -- book work, day-job work, last-minute portuguese-english translations to do and a lightning-quick trip to brussels in amongst all that. today we spent the day tidying the flat and boy, did it ever need it.

fortunately housecleaning goes very quickly when accompanied by some storming baile funk. and then i rewarded myself by doing a spot of baking: banana muffins from nigella's super-easy recipe. so not only was the houses clean, but it smelled delicious.

A few pretty things:

~ lunch studio, wherein two architects in new york document their lunches (and afternoon teas!) elegant photos, fabulous food. found via hoping for happy accidents, which also features an interview with the ladies (who lunch) themselves.

~ utterly fantastic photographs at ridin' dirty face -- i can't describe them, just go and look, i promise it's worth it! via gala darling, whose website is a very very good time :-)

~ beautiful words: soneto xvii de pablo neruda, in english here.

~ when things are busy, it must be said, chocolate helps. my mum sent me a big bar of whittaker's dark ginger, and my goodness it was delicious. if only you could buy it easily here!

and so .. another week awaits ..

if you need some eye candy on a cold and miserable london evening (really, it's like winter's here all over again -- it even snowed this afternoon) then head on over to my pal kim's site. because he's a very cool and funny guy and he takes really great photos. and he's just moved to beijing. how much more of a recommendation do you need?

i have cheered up this grey and chilly day by wearing a vintage dress and liquid eyeliner, eating oranges and singing ivete sangalo songs to myself. "poeiraaa .. levantou poeira!" hurry back, sun.

funfair

five good things, for a friday:

- funfairs! this one was last year, actually, which just goes to show what undiscovered pleasures can lurk on a roll of film. especially one that's been sitting in your office, waiting for months for you to get it developed. ahem.
- e-mails from people you've not seen for a very, very long time. i've had two of those this week, and they've both been wonderful.
- spring sunshine, blossoms and bright blue skies. the scent of hyacinths floating on the suddenly-warm air.
- soy hot chocolate, consumed while sitting outside people-watching on old compton street.
- a new musical discovery -- well, new to me, anyway -- patrick wolf. oh, my.

have a lovely weekend, everyone xx

chungking hotel

five things you must do if you go to hong kong, in my opinion:

1. the minute you get there, go to the hong kong tourist board website, get the details and book a place on the duk ling junk ride. the duk ling is a beautiful restored chinese junk and twice a week the hktb hires her to take tourists out onto the harbour. for free. yes, that's right. there aren't many free things in HK, let alone free things that are as cool as this, so get to it!

2. take the tram up to the peak. make sure it's a clear day, and the views are stunning. go to the viewing platform at the top of the shopping mall, and then head out of the mall and climb up mount austin road. the views get even better, the cool air is lovely and the chance to have a sneaky look at the stratospherically-expensive real estate is not to be missed :-)

3. go to tea at the the peninsula hotel. "the pen", as the locals call it, is one of the last bastions of colonial HK, and it is utterly wonderful -- tea, cake, tiny sandwiches and pastries with tinkling string music in the background and the best people-watching in the city.

4. take the star ferry from kowloon to hong kong island. this is a beautiful journey and particularly so at night, when the buildings are all lit up. the skyline of hong kong is spectacular and this is one of the best places to see it from.

5. eat! well, you know me. for us, the highlights were fantastic dim sum at the luk yu tea house on stanley road in central; a truly outstanding shanghainese meal at the red pepper restaurant in causeway bay (that review says it's popular with expats, but don't let that put you off -- the sizzling prawns alone are worth the trip); and a chinese friend of john's took us to eat in a wet market in north point, which was an incredible experience -- a huge tiled room full of tables of people eating remarkable food, all the staff in wellington boots and no menus -- the waiters tell you what they think is good that day, and you order it. thus john found himself confronted with a pile of black chicken's feet marinated in guinness. but that, my dears, is another story ..

oh, and you can see pictures of all of these things and more at my flickr page -- go go!

i should say, these are just my suggestions and to be honest there are so so many other things to do -- we went to the horse races at happy valley, john went shopping for toys, i went shopping for cameras, you can have clothes made for you (although we didn't), you can go out to the islands and plus there are charming little shrines and temples everywhere -- it truly is a brilliant place. if you have any other suggestions, add 'em in the comments!

allow me a moment to just secretly hug myself in a goody-goody-gumdrops fashion. i'm sitting in a hotel room in hong kong, looking out over victoria harbour. it's just rained and the sun has come out. john is in the bathroom shaving and in a minute we're going out to get breakfast and explore a new city. oh yes.

a vida é uma loucura, enrolada numa seda, baseada em nada ..

there is a reason for the silence, i promise! i didn't slip into a nostalgia-induced coma, lying in a bed humming obscure brazilian rock music, no no ..

i am currently in new zealand, caught in a bit of a whirlwind of family celebrations (well, we did run away to vegas to get married without telling them, so this is their chance to make a fuss). a long flight, suddenly landing in the middle of summer, re-entry into one of my favourite cities in the world (auckland), fiddling with old cameras, cake, green eyeshadow, listening to classic rock stations in traffic jams, spray tans and spending time with people i adore more than any in the world. it's been kind of a crazy week, so i hope you can bear with me. there'll be photos and stories to tell very, very soon.
